"It's crazy that in a system that is meant to teach and help the youth there is no voice from the youth at all"
If students could design their own school and study whatever they would like, would they choose to learn instead of being forced to learn? Would students act within their school as most adults do in society and work to defend and preserve rights for everyone?
Monument Mountain Regional High School is a part of a unique program called the Independent Project. This program is an “alternative” school with no teachers, parents, or adults. It is all student led. Most parents could argue that giving their children the freedom to learn is not the right way for kids to get educated. A lot of parents think that there kid would not learn anything and that they would go to school to “play”(The Independent Project). Surprisingly, instead of the students reacting irresponsibly to the freedom to design their own studies, they eagerly were interested in writing their own stories, learning how to play different instruments. Experimental schools such as Monument have demonstrated time and again that students will rise to the challenge when presented with the opportunity to exercise responsibility. Students who receive more autonomy at school consistently react by accepting more responsibility, performing better academically and creating a more peaceful school environment overall. Perhaps if all schools were student run, the question of when and where the administration is justified in stepping in to limit rights would become an unnecessary one.
