Hazelwood School District vs Kuhlmeier
Another case brought to the Supreme Court was Hazelwood School District vs Kuhlmeier in 1988. This case was brought to the Supreme Court to affirm the right of a principal in St. Louis to delete material from a student newspaper. One story in the newspaper talked about three pregnant students, detailing their sexual histories, discussing their use of birth control, and giving enough information for the readers to be able to identify each student(Student Rights Vs. School Responsibilities, Howard Pierson). A Civil Liberties Union representative claimed that a public school principal, unlike a private publisher, is a government official and cannot arbitrarily control student speech and press. But according to the Supreme court, principle Robert E. Reynolds was reasonable, not arbitrary, when he deleted two pages from a year-end issue of the Hazelwood East High School paper. The Court emphasized that students in public schools do not always have the same First Amendment rights as adults in other settings.
